Measure would amend the California State Constitution to explicitly prohibit interfering with individual’s reproductive freedom and choices
Sacramento – Today, the California Secretary of State announced proposition numbers for all qualified measures set to appear on the November 8, 2022 ballot, including Proposition 1, which will guarantee reproductive freedom by adding a fundamental right to abortion in the California State Constitution. The measure will also protect whether a person chooses to use or refuse contraceptives.
“The recent ruling by the conservative Supreme Court has made it clear — we must take action in California to ensure that people continue to have the power to control their own bodies and their personal decisions. That’s why Proposition 1, which I authored, is so critical,” said Senate President pro Tempore Toni G. Atkins (D-San Diego), Co-Chair of the Yes on Prop 1 campaign. “Abortion is health care, and health care decisions should be decided by the patient and their health care provider. I look forward to the campaign ahead, and ultimately adding abortion and contraceptive rights directly into our California State Constitution.”
“Prop 1 will ensure that individuals and families continue to have the freedom to decide if and when to have children because access to affordable, comprehensive reproductive health care- including abortion and birth control – allows people to plan their lives and achieve their dreams,” said Jodi Hicks, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California President & CEO and Co-Chair of the Yes on Prop 1 campaign. “Regardless of who or what party controls the government or the Courts, health care is a right in California and we need to ensure that any person’s right to an abortion is protected here.”
The measure would amend the California State Constitution to explicitly prohibit interfering with personal choices related to reproductive care. It would ensure a fundamental right to abortion continues to remain a choice between a person and their health care provider and would also protect access to contraceptives.
